New Zealand Drivers License
A New Zealand driver’s license is administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). A New Zealand driving license allows individuals to legally operate motor vehicles on the country’s roads, subject to certain conditions and endorsements.
Applying for a New Zealand Drivers License
If you’re planning on driving in New Zealand, you will need to know a few rules, We give you the lowdown on what you need to do to stay safe.
In addition to people with a current, valid New Zealand drivers license, anyone can drive in New Zealand who:
- Has a current, valid overseas license or permit, and
- Has not been disqualified or suspended, and
- Has been in New Zealand less than 12 months, and
- Knows the New Zealand road rules
It’s possible to convert your overseas license to a New Zealand license within 12 months of arriving. It’s usually easier than applying for a New Zealand license, but some people have to take a written and oral test, depending on what country they got their license in.
After living in New Zealand for 12 months, you have to get a New Zealand driver’s license (if you haven’t already converted your overseas license). That involves a written test on the road code and a practical test in which a policeman or woman observes your driving.
International Driving Permits (IDP):
Visitors to New Zealand may use an International Driving Permit (IDP) in conjunction with their foreign driver’s license for a limited period. The IDP translates the details of the foreign license into multiple languages and is recognized in many countries worldwide. However, it’s important to note that an IDP does not replace a valid driver’s license.
Cost of renewing a New Zealand drivers license
In most cases, it takes less than 10 minutes to renew your license.
To renew your license, you must apply at a driver licensing agent.
You will need to:
- fill out an application form [PDF, 204 KB]
- present evidence of your identity
- prove your eyesight meets the required standard
- provide a medical certificate (if required)
- let the agent take your photo and signature
- pay the renewal application fee.
You’ll then receive a temporary license, which is valid for 21 days. Keep this on you whenever you’re driving until your new driver’s license arrives in the mail—within 2 to 3 weeks.
